It is a mixed unit for research, CNRS/IN2P3 (Institute for nuclear physics and particles physics) and Aix-Marseille Université. CPPM is located on the scientific and technological park of Marseilles Luminy. The laboratory consists of about a hundred of permanent persons and a substantial number of doctorants and foreign visitors.
Fundamental research in particles physics, astroparticules and in observational cosmology:
To study the ultimate components of the matter and the forces which connect them ;
To apprehend the origin of the mass of the particles;
To understand the mechanism having led to the disappearance of the antimatter during the evolution of the Universe;
To seek new particles predicted by the most advanced theories;
To observe cosmos by the detection of the elementary particles of very high energy;
To understand the composition of the Universe by the study and the observation of the supernovas.
Our scientific programs:
The scientific programs of our experiments fall under the problems and the fundamental interrogations of our discipline. The experiments in which we take part are carried out within great international collaborations. They are installed near powerful particle accelerators, Europeans and American, near large terrestrial and space telescopes but also at the bottom of the Mediterranean sea. The experimental stakes of our research require the implementation of advanced techniques in electronics, data processing and instrumentation. They generate innovating concepts or products which interest scientists of other fields. This leads us to develop interdisciplinary projects with industrial companies and other regional, national and international laboratories.
Our technical skills:
The detectors we develop call upon avant-garde technologies in mechanics, electronics and data processing. Their complexity requires the formalized methods of project management and quality insurance. Through these expertises, the Center of Physics of the Particles of Marseilles can collaborate with the industrialists in many technological fields. The studies of the various detectors lead us to carry out applications in the fields of health and the environment: the medical imagery and the study of the marine environments at sea deep are two examples.
Our role in the area:
We contribute to create a pole of research for avant-garde and high technologies which attract the high level international scientists. We take part in the dissemination of knowledge, the higher education and the formation by research, on all the levels, from secondary school to the doctoral formation. We support the technology transfer while collaborating in the development of techniques and methods in SME. The laboratory, as a result of its activities - Antares, micro-electronics, imagery - works with local competitivity poles : « Eurobiomed », « Mer Méditerranée », « Optitec », « Safe», « Solutions Communicantes Sécurisées ».
