Neutrinos

L'équipe Astroparticules Neutrinos du CPPM est fortement impliquée sur les télescopes à neutrinos ANTARES et KM3NeT déployés dans les abysses de la Mer Méditerranée, utilisés pour la recherche de neutrinos cosmiques et pour des études des propriétés fondamentales des neutrinos.

Dans le cadre de ses recherches de neutrinos de hautes énergies provenant de sources astrophysiques transitoires, l'équipe participe également au développement du télescope robotisé COLIBRI, associé au futur détecteur spatial SVOM.

L'équipe recherche aussi, dans l'expérience SuperNEMO, une nouvelle physique au travers de l’étude d’une décroissance radioactive très rare, la double désintégration béta sans neutrino (ββ)0ν (\beta \beta)_{0 \nu} .

Le détecteur ANTARES a été le plus grand télescope à neutrinos de l’hémisphère Nord et le premier construit en milieu marin. En fonctionnement entre 2006 et2022, il était installé par 2500 m de profondeur à 40 km au large de Toulon (France).

Le but principal d’ANTARES était la recherche de neutrinos cosmiques provenant des phénomènes violents de l’Univers. L’infrastructure sous-marine d’ANTARES a constitué également une véritable plateforme d’expérimentation pluridisciplinaire permettant de nombreuses études dans les domaines des Sciences de la Mer, de la Terre et de l’Environnement.

Au CPPM, l’équipe joue un rôle moteur dans l’exploitation de ce détecteur et les analyses de données. Elle est en particulier fortement impliquée sur :

  • la recherche de neutrinos cosmiques provenant de sources transitoires ou variables ;
  • les analyses multi-messagers de sources astrophysiques ;
  • la recherche indirecte de Matière Noire en direction du Soleil et du centre galactique ;
  • la mesure des paramètres d’oscillation des neutrinos et les contraintes sur les modèles de neutrinos stériles.

L’équipe du CPPM est également responsable de l’opération et de la maintenance du détecteur et de la salle de contrôle, en tant que laboratoire hôte de l’expérience. Elle est aussi fortement impliquée sur la calibration et la gouvernance de la Collaboration.

Le détecteur KM3NeT est un télescope à neutrinos de seconde génération installé dans les abysses de la Méditerranée, conçu grâce au retour d’expérience du détecteur ANTARES.

Une première version de détecteur, baptisé ARCA, installé au large de la Sicile, est dédiée à la recherche de neutrinos de grande énergie provenant de cataclysmes de l’Univers tels que des supernovæ ou la formation et l’évolution de trous noirs. Un second détecteur, baptisé ORCA, est en construction au large de Toulon. Il permettra une détermination de la hiérarchie de masse des neutrinos, en étudiant précisément le flux des neutrinos atmosphériques traversant la Terre. L’infrastructure sous-marine MEUST-NUMerEnv du détecteur ORCA constitue également une véritable plateforme d’expérimentation pluridisciplinaire accueillant de nombreuses études dans les domaines des Sciences de la Mer, de la Terre et de l’Environnement dans le cadre de l’observatoire fond de mer EMSO.

Ce projet est financé avec le concours de l’Union Européenne avec le Fonds Européen de Développement Régional.

Au CPPM, l’équipe joue un rôle moteur dans la conception, la construction et l’exploitation du détecteur KM3NeT-ORCA et les analyses de données de KM3NeT. Elle est en particulier fortement impliqué sur :

La mission spatiale SVOM (Space based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor) est un projet sino-français dédié à la détection et à l’étude des sursauts gamma dont le lancement est prévu en juin 2024. La durée prévue du projet est de 3 ans avec une extension de 2 ans.

Découverts de manière fortuite dans les années 70, les sursauts gamma sont des bouffées intenses de photons de haute énergie dont l’origine semble être liée à l’explosion d’étoiles hyper massives ou à la fusion de deux étoiles à neutrons. Ces sursauts sont les phénomènes les plus lumineux jamais observés depuis le Big Bang. Ces sources pourraient être aussi à l’origine des rayons cosmiques de très haute énergie. De ce fait, ils sont également les candidats les plus favorables comme contreparties de neutrinos de haute énergie. Cette synergie avec les neutrinos est une des thématiques fortes de l'équipe ANTARES/KM3NeT du CPPM. La recherche menée avec SVOM apportera des informations complémentaires aux informations recueillies par ANTARES et KM3NeT.

L'équipe du CPPM est impliqué dans la construction et l’exploitation du télescope robotique COLIBRI qui sera installé à San Pedro Martir au Mexique et dédié au suivi optique et infra-rouge des alertes du satellite SVOM. Le CPPM est impliqué principalement dans le software du télescope, en particulier sur le développement du centre instrumental de l’instrument et de l’ensemble des outils d’analyse des images du visible et du proche infra-rouge.

Le détecteur SuperNEMO est un détecteur tracko-calorimetrique modulaire, permettant d’étudier la cinématique de la double désintégration bêta (émission simultanée de deux électrons issus du même noyau et dont l’énergie somme est fixe). Pour cela, le détecteur SuperNEMO, est constitué par un module central, source ββ\beta \beta entouré par deux modules de tracking où la trajectoire des deux électrons est reconstruite et finalement deux modules de scintillateurs plastiques pour le calcul de l’énergie des électrons.

Le projet SuperNEMO s’inscrit dans le cadre des expériences cherchant à découvrir la nature du neutrino et déterminer ainsi si celui-ci est identique, ou non, à son antiparticule. Cette recherche, qui explore une nouvelle physique au-delà du Modèle Standard, est réalisée au travers de l’étude d’une décroissance radioactive très rare, la double désintégration bêta sans Neutrino (ββ)0ν (\beta \beta)_{0 \nu} . Au-delà de l’étude de la nature Dirac ou Majorana du neutrino, la (ββ)0ν (\beta \beta)_{0 \nu} nous permet de caractériser la hiérarchie de masse des neutrinos et d'explorer plusieurs aspects fondamentaux liés à la non conservation du nombre leptonique.

Responsabilités de l’équipe : Pendant la phase de construction de SuperNEMO l’équipe du CPPM travaille sur les des taches suivantes :

  • Purification du gaz du trackeur pour maintenir la concentration de radon inferieure à 150 µBq/m3.
  • Reconditionnement et circulation du gaz du trackeur.
  • Etude du bruit de fond de SuperNEMO à l’aide du tracking gamma.

  • Septembre-Octobre 2023 : Présentation de plus de 20 ans de recherche sous-marine de neutrinos avec ANTARES et KM3NeT à l'exposition "Des abysses au Cosmos" au Fort Napoléon à La Seyne sur Mer
  • Septembre 2023 : Installation de nouvelles lignes de détection sur le site KM3NeT/ARCA. Ce détecteur compte désormais 28 lignes en prise de données continue.
  • Juin 2023 : Après une campagne de tests à l'Observatoire de Haute-Provence, le télescope COLIBRI est envoyé au Mexique pour son installation définitive à l'Observatoire San Pedro Martir en Baja California.
  • Avril 2023 : Installation de 3 nouvelles lignes de détection sur le site KM3NeT/ORCA. Ce détecteur compte désormais 18 lignes en prise de données continue.
  • Décembre 2022 : Grand Prix de la recherche 2022 du département des Bouches-du-Rhône a été décerné à l’équipe astroparticules neutrinos.
  • Décembre 2022 : Installation de 4 nouvelles lignes de détection sur le site KM3NeT/ORCA. Ce détecteur comprend désormais 15 lignes immergées avec plus de 7500 photomultiplicateurs.
  • Septembre 2022 : Installation de nouvelles lignes de détection sur le site KM3NeT/ARCA. Ce détecteur compte désormais 21 lignes en prise de données continue.
  • Juin 2022 : Nouvelle étape majeure du démantèlement du détecteur ANTARES par la récupération de toutes les lignes de détection. Seuls la boîte de jonction et son câble principal de liaison à terre restent présents sur le site sous-marin.
  • Février 2022 : Arrêt définitif de l'opération du détecteur ANTARES, après 16 années de prises de données en continu. Lors d'une première étape dans les opérations de démantèlement du détecteur, toutes les câbles liants les lignes à la Boîte de Jonction principale ont été débranchés.
  • Novembre 2021 : Installation de 4 nouvelles lignes de détection sur le site KM3NeT/ORCA. Ce détecteur compte désormais 10 lignes en prise de données continue.
  • Septembre 2021 : Installation de 2 nouvelles lignes de détection sur le site KM3NeT/ARCA. Ce détecteur compte désormais 8 lignes en prise de données continue.
  • Avril 2021 : Installation d'une nouvelle boîte de jonction et de 5 nouvelles lignes de détection sur le site KM3NeT/ARCA. Avec 6 lignes ORCA et 6 lignes ARCA en opération, KM3NeT a maintenant une sensibilité comparable à ANTARES pour la détection des neutrinos.
  • Mars 2021 : Publication de la sensibilité sur la détermination de l'ordonnancement des masses des neutrinos et les mesures des paramètres d'oscillation avec KM3NeT/ORCA, dont le CPPM est auteur principal.
  • Février 2021 : Paschal Coyle, physicien au CPPM, est nommé Porte-Parole de la Collaboration KM3NeT pour 2 ans.
  • Février 2021 : Publication de la sensibilité sur la détection de neutrinos issus de supernovæ à effondrement de cœur avec KM3NeT, dont le CPPM est auteur principal.
  • Octobre 2020 : Déploiement et connexion du Node2 de l’infrastructure sous-marine MEUST/NUMerEnv/LSPM.
  • Eté 2020 : l'intégration du détecteur au Germanium, qui étudiera la radioactivité à grande profondeur sur le site MEUST/NUMerEnv, est terminée et le détecteur est en cours de test et calibration dans la plateforme Prisna à Bordeaux.

Photons

CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) est une initiative mondiale visant à construire l'observatoire de rayons gamma à haute énergie, le plus grand et le plus sensible au monde. Il sera constitué de plus de 100 télescopes à imagerie Tcherenkov atmosphérique (IACT) de trois tailles différentes (grands, moyens et petits télescopes) situés dans l'hémisphère nord et l'hémisphère sud. CTA détectera les rayonnements à haute énergie avec une précision sans précédent et une sensibilité environ 10 fois supérieure à celle des instruments actuels de type IACT tels que HESS.

CTA transformera notre compréhension de l'Univers à haute énergie en abordant trois grands thèmes d'étude : comprendre l'origine et le rôle des particules cosmiques relativistes, sonder les environnements extrêmes tels que les trous noirs et, explorer les frontières de la physique en recherchant la matière noire et de possibles écarts à la théorie de la relativité.

Le CPPM participe à la fois au projet CTA ainsi qu’à celui de H.E.S.S. et a des responsabilités dans les domaines suivants :

  • Système d'acquisition pour les grands et moyens télescopes (NectarCAM et LSTCAM)
  • Simulation Monte Carlo et vérification
  • Calibration hors ligne des grands télescopes (LST)
  • Évaluation des performances de CTA dans la détection des sources de rayons cosmiques galactiques
  • Programme de cibles galactiques dans H.E.S.S. sur alertes via d'autres longueurs d'ondes ou messagers

  • Construction : L'Event Builder du CPPM a été adapté et validé avec une structure de réseau "deep buffer" à deux niveaux de commutateurs sur la première caméra NectarCAM complète (265 modules pour un total de 1855 PMTs) à l'IRFU au CEA Saclay. (Juin 2021)
  • Mise au point : Le télescope LST-1 détecté des émissions de très haute énergie du pulsar dans la nébuleuse du Crabe. (Juin 2020)
  • Mise au point : Le télescope LST-1 a détecté son premier signal de rayons gamma lors d'une campagne de plusieurs jours, quand il pointait sur la nébuleuse du Crabe un rémanant de supernova qui est considéré comme chandelle standard en astronomie gamma de très hautes énergies (Décembre 2019)
  • Construction : La caméra NectarCAM a été équipée des 61 premiers modules de production (environ un quart du champ de vue nominal) et montée temporairement sur la structure du prototype de télescope de taille moyenne (MST) à Berlin-Adlershof afin de l'opérer sous conditions réelles. L'Event Builder du CPPM assure également la prise de données lors de cette campagne. (Mai/Juin 2019)
  • Construction : Le premier télescope de grande taille, LST1, est entré en service sur le site de l'observatoire du Roque de los Muchachos sur l'île de La Palma, aux Canaries. (Octobre 2018)
  • Activité DAQ : L'Event Builder du CPPM a été adapté et testé sur la première caméra LSTCAM (265 modules pour un total de 1855 PMTs) à l'IFAE Barcelone. (Juin 2018)
  • Activité DAQ : L'Event Builder du CPPM a été adapté et testé sur un prototype partiel de LSTCAM (19 modules de 7 PMTs) à l'IAC Tenerife. (Juin 2017)
  • Activité Monte Carlo : Une seconde campagne d'observation (premières données Cherenkov pour CTA) à SST-GCT à Meudon (Mars 2017). Comparaison des données avec les simulations au CPPM
