ATLAS

Le détecteur ATLAS est une expérience généraliste de physique des particules, installée auprès du LHC, le grand collisionneur de hadrons du Cern à Genève. ATLAS a été construit et est exploité par plus de 3000 physiciens issus de 182 laboratoires et universités de 38 pays.

La prise de données a débuté en 2009, et le programme scientifique s'étend jusque vers 2035. ATLAS a notamment découvert en 2012 le boson de Higgs, à l'origine de la masse des particules élémentaires, et depuis en étudie précisément les caractéristiques. La collaboration cherche également de nouvelles particules non-prévues par le cadre théorique actuel et pouvant par exemple expliquer la matière sombre de l'univers.

Constitué d'environ 45 physiciens, ingénieurs, doctorants et post-doctorants, l'équipe du CPPM est membre de la collaboration ATLAS depuis sa création en 1994.

Notre équipe a participé à la conception, la construction, les tests et la mise en œuvre de plusieurs éléments du détecteur ATLAS: le détecteur à pixels (électronique frontale et mécanique, refroidissement), le calorimètre électromagnétique (maîtrise d'œuvre des bouchons), le système de déclenchement (architecture haut-niveau). S'appuyant sur ces expertises, nous sommes très impliqués dans les études des performances des objets de physique, notamment les jets issus de quarks b et les électrons.

Notre programme de physique au Run 2 est articulé autour de deux axes exploitant ces signatures: la recherche de nouvelle physique et en particulier de la supersymétrie, et l'étude des propriétés du boson de Higgs et notamment son couplage au quark top.

En vue du Run 3 puis de la phase HL-LHC, notre équipe est très active dans la R&D et les projets d'amélioration du détecteur ATLAS, à la fois en ce qui concerne la calorimétrie électromagnétique et les détecteurs à pixels pour le futur trajectographe ITK.

  • 4 juin 2018 : publication de l'observation de la production ttH par ATLAS avec une contribution significative du CPPM.

  • 24 décembre 2017 : annonce de la mise en évidence dans ATLAS de la production ttH.

  • année 2017 : finalisation des TDR pour les jouvences de phase 2, notamment ceux sur la calorimétrie et les pixels ITk.

  • 3 juin 2015 : faisceaux stables dans le LHC, premières collisions à 13 TeV et premiers signaux dans la nouvelle couche IBL ! Le début du Run 2 ...

  • 9 décembre 2014 : un premier aimant du LHC atteint le courant nécessaire pour communiquer une énergie de 6.5 TeV aux protons, ouvrant ainsi la voie à la prise de données Run 2 du LHC qui débutera au printemps 2015.

  • juin 2014 : le premier circuit 3D à pixels pour ATLAS, conçu au CPPM, est qualifié pour supporter la dose de radiations attendue à HL-LHC.

  • 7 mai 2014 : insertion de la quatrième couche de pixels IBL dans ATLAS pour laquelle le CPPM a eu des contributions majeures sur la puce de lecture électronique FE-I4 et sur la mécanique.

  • octobre 2013 : attribution du Prix Nobel de Physique à F. Englert et P. Higgs.

  • 4 juillet 2012 : annonce de la découverte du boson de Higgs par ATLAS (et CMS).

  • 17 décembre 2012 : fin de la prise de données proton-proton du Run 1 du LHC, avec 6 millions de milliards de collisions proton-proton effectuées dans ATLAS dont 5 milliards sélectionnées par le système de déclenchement, représentant une luminosité intégrée de 25/fb, supérieure de 50% à ce qui était prévu.

  • 30 mars 2010 : premières collisions de protons de haute énergie (7 TeV) dans le LHC.

LHCb

L’expérience LHCb est installée auprès du grand collisionneur de hadrons LHC au Cern, à Genève.

Le but de l’expérience est de mettre en évidence de la Nouvelle Physique en effectuant des mesures de précisions dans les désintégrations des hadrons beaux et charmés.
La collaboration LHCb regroupe 1250 membres, issus de 78 laboratoires et universités de 17 pays.

Au CPPM, notre équipe a conçu le système de déclenchement à muons pour les Run1&2 et les cartes d’acquisitions à 40MHz pour les run3 et au-delà. Nous assurons la coordination du projet DIRAC qui forme la base du système de calcul distribué.

Nous avons joué un rôle majeur dans plusieurs analyses clés (Bsμ+μB_s\to\mu^+\mu^- , BsJ/ψϕB_s \to J/\psi \phi ) et nous nous focalisons actuellement sur les modes liés aux « anomalies de saveurs » (neutres et chargées) observées par les expériences LHCb, Belle et BaBar et dont les effets combinés présentent des déviations d’environ 4σ4 \sigma par rapport aux prédictions théoriques. Nous étudions spécifiquement les modes rares avec des leptons τ\tau dans l’état final, B(s)Kττ,Kτμ,ττ,τμ B(s) \to K^{\ast} \tau \tau , K \tau \mu, \tau \tau, \tau \mu , ainsi que le ratio R(D) R(D^{\ast}) des rapports d'embranchement des modes de désintégration BDτν B \to D^{\ast} \tau \nu et BDμν B \to D^\ast \mu \nu .

SuperNEMO

Le détecteur SuperNEMO est un détecteur tracko-calorimetrique modulaire, permettant d’étudier la cinématique de la double désintégration beta (émission simultanée de deux électrons issus du même noyau et dont l’énergie somme est fixe). Pour cela, le détecteur SuperNEMO, est constitué par un module central, source ββ\beta \beta entouré par deux modules de tracking où la trajectoire des deux électrons est reconstruite et finalement deux modules de scintillateurs plastiques pour le calcul de l’énergie des électrons.

Le projet SuperNEMO s’inscrit dans le cadre des expériences cherchant à découvrir la nature du neutrino et déterminer ainsi si celui-ci est identique, ou non, à son antiparticule. Cette recherche, qui explore une nouvelle physique au-delà du Modelé Standard, est réalisée au travers de l’étude d’une décroissance radioactive très rare, la Double Désintégration Beta sans Neutrino (ββ)0ν (\beta \beta)_{0 \nu} . Au-delà de l’étude de la nature Dirac ou Majorana du neutrino, la (ββ)0ν (\beta \beta)_{0 \nu} nous permet caractériser la hiérarchie de masse des neutrinos et explorer plusieurs aspects fondamentaux liés à la non conservation du nombre leptonique.

Responsabilités de l’équipe : Pendant la phase de construction de SuperNEMO l’équipe du CPPM travaille sur les des taches suivantes :

  • Purification du gaz du trackeur pour maintenir la concentration de radon inferieure a 150 µBq/m3.
  • Reconditionnement et circulation du gaz du trackeur.
  • Etude du bruit de fond de SuperNEMO à l’aide du tracking gamma.
