# ATLAS

The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva, is a multi-purpose experiment for particle physics, run by an international collaboration of 3000 physicists from 182 labs and universities representing 38 countries world-wide.

ATLAS started taking data in 2009, and will continue to do so till 2035. The experiment has discovered in 2012 the Higgs boson which provides a mass to all the elementary particles, and since then is scrutinizing its properties. The collaboration is also looking for new particles beyond the current theoretical framework, that could for instance explain the dark matter in the universe.

The ATLAS team at CPPM gathers about 45 physicists, engineers, PhD students and post-doctoral fellows. The team has been a member of the ATLAS collaboration since its inception in 1994.

We took part in the design, construction, testing and implementation of several elements of the ATLAS detector: the pixel detector (front-end electronics and mechanics, assembly, cooling), the electromagnetic calorimeter (project manager for the end-caps),the triggering system (high level architecture).

Building on this expertise, we are deeply involved in the performance studies including the identification of jets from /bottom/ quarks and of electrons. Our physics program in Run 2 follows two axes exploiting these signatures: new physics searches, in particular supersymmetry, and the study of the properties of Higgs boson and notably its coupling to the /top/ quark.

Ahead of Run 3 (and beyond), the team contributes to the upgrade program of the electronics for the electromagnetic calorimeter trigger. The team is also actively involved in the pixel R&D (electronics, mechanics, simulations) for the new ITK tracker for the high-luminosity phase of LHC.

• 4th June 2018: publication of the production of the Higgs boson with a pair of top quarks (ttH) by the ATLAS team, with a significant contribution of CPPM.

• 24th December 2017: evidence seen by ATLAS of the ttH associate production.

• 2017: finalization of the Phase 2 Upgrade TDRs, including those on calorimetry and ITk pixels.

• April 2016: first proton collisions in ATLAS for 2016

# LHCb

The LHCb experiment is installed at the LHC, the Large Hadron Collider, at CERN, in Geneva.

The purpose of the experiment is to uncover New Physics by performing precision measurements in the decays of beauty and charm hadrons.
The LHCb collaboration has 1250 members from 78 laboratories and universities in 17 countries.

At CPPM, the team designed the muon trigger system for Run1&2 and the 40MHz acquisition boards for Run3 and beyond. We ensure the coordination of the DIRAC project which constitutes the basis of the distributed computing system.

We have played a major role in several key analyses ($B_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ , $B_s \to J/\psi \phi$ ) and are currently focusing our efforts on some of the modes related to "flavor anomalies" (neutral and charged) observed by the LHCb, Belle and BaBar experiments, the combined effects of which show a deviation of about $4 \sigma$ from the theoretical predictions. We are specifically studying the rare modes with $\tau$ in the final state, $B(s) \to K^{\ast} \tau \tau , K \tau \mu, \tau \tau, \tau \mu$ , and the ratio between the branching ratios $R (D^{\ast} ) = BR(B \to D^{\ast} \tau \nu) / BR(B \to D^\ast \mu \nu)$ .

# SuperNEMO

The SuperNEMO detector is a modular tracko-calorimetric detector, allowing to study the kinematics of the double beta disintegration (simultaneous emission of two electrons coming from the same nucleus and whose sum energy is fixed). For that, the SuperNEMO detector, is constituted by a central module, source $\beta \beta$ surrounded by two tracking modules where the trajectory of the two electrons is reconstructed and finally two modules of plastic scintillators for the calculation of the energy of the electrons.

The SuperNEMO project is part of experiments to discover the nature of neutrino and thus determine whether or not it is identical to its antiparticle. This research, which explores a new physics beyond the Standard Model, is realized through the study of a very rare radioactive decay, the Double Disintegration Beta without Neutrino $(\beta \beta)_{0 \nu}$ . Beyond the study of the Dirac or Majorana nature of neutrino, the $(\beta \beta)_{0 \nu}$ allows us to characterize the mass hierarchy of neutrinos and explore several fundamental aspects related to the non conservation of lepton numbers.

Responsabilités de l’équipe :

During the SuperNEMO construction phase the CPPM team works on the following tasks:

• Purification of tracer gas to keep radon concentration below 150 µBq/m3 ;
• Reconditioning and circulation of tracker gas ;
• Study of SuperNEMO background noise using gamma tracking.
